It's been a few weeks since your post. How is your hip doing now? Getting relief from pain is so hit and miss and many times relys on finances. In my recent quest to handle tendonitis in my shoulder I am into the "get out of pain" search. These joint things can take time. The odds of you having "instant bursitis" after "abusing" the hip for a day is curious and so you may have an overuse injury. Here are a few things that can't hurt.
I'd recommend 2 or 3 chiropractic visits to see what can be gained. If you don't see progress by then it may not be the answer. And a lot depends on the chiropractor.
Vitamin C builds collagen and has healing powers. The trick is to figure out how much. Vitamin C as sodium ascorbate is less acedic and can be used for high oral doses. There is a wonderful health aid in what is called Bowel Tolerance doses. Basically it means taking enough C to produce diarrhea. Very interesting literature on this. Do a search for Cathcart Bowel Tolerance. You might go through a bottle of Sodium Ascorbate in 3 days but this is a generally valuable protocol to have under your power to use for just about any health problem. If you need a source for the Sodium Ascorbate (which is vitamin C but the labeling restrictions prevent it being sold as vitamin C) try N.E.E.D.S. @ needs.com.
Also, heat and cold applications....if it is bursitis heat will make the pain worse and cold will feel good. If the heat feels good you may want to try heat for about 20 minutes and then cold for about 5 or 10 minutes.
Depending on the degree you are into self-help for pain Dr. Sherry Rogers wrote "Pain Free in 6 Weeks." It is a litany of things to try (underline try)...when Dr. Rogers had severe hip pain she did super-human things with the help of her husband rather than submit to surgery. But the principles are there...don't do anything that will cause you pain while your hip is trying to heal. Pain killers are not out of the question to get over acute stages but generally you would never take a pain killer and then use the offended joint more than you should because you can't feel the pain.
Best of luck,
