Salads are raw foods, most salad foods are raw vegetables and any raw vegetables would qualify as raw food allowed after a fast. Fruit is the highest water content, softest and most cleansing of the raw foods which makes it the best food to break a fast with as a general rule. I make a point of waiting until at least my bowels are functioning normally after a long term fast especially on fruit only before I add any salads, and so far the I have felt good breaking my fast for half it's length of days on fruit only.

Raw vegetables are usually whatever you like best in a salad. I know one person who eats raw potatoes, and I believe some are able to eat whole raw onions, just biting into them like an apple! lol I can't manage either of these feats to be honest, but they would also qualify as raw if we chose to eat them that way. Things like broccoli and cauliflower which we'd usually cook however do combine well with a simple raw nut butter dip or something similar. I have also eaten raw nuts during the second half of my refeeding and that also has worked out fine. Another good way to liven up your salad, adding taste and a bit of bulk/fat if you feel the need for something extra is to slice an avocado into it. Avocados can be combined with both fruit and vegetables they are a very versatile as well as extremely yummy food. The only thing I have read to be careful combining them with is proteins. So if later on you are adding cooked beans or meats to your salads it would be best according to Natural Hygiene rules to leave the avocado out of it. Raw nuts avoid this combining rule to some extent because of their high water content and therefore can be mixed in small amounts say as dips in a largely raw meal.

Otherwise making your salad is as much a matter of going shopping and seeing what's on offer/in season, as anything else. I usually grate carrots (and beetroot hehe) slice tomatoes and cucumbers, shred lettuce, and mix sprouts through mine. You can also use corn off the cob, raw preferably but cooked would be acceptable as the rest of the salad is raw. I usually don't 'dress' mine at all but you could add lemon or lime juice to it. I have also read that adding pineapple pieces to it is acceptable and can even add to the efficiency of the digestion. It's a matter of finding what is most pleasing to you and will keep you coming back for more! :)

I would eat the salad mostly or all raw for the first few days depending on the length of the fast, then start adding a single cooked food in small amounts (say 10%). I add things like cooked beans of various types, tofu cooked in onion tamari and lemon juice, and a very plain nut loaf.

I have found cabbage a bit bitter in the past, not sure if I will learn to appreciate it raw over the next couple of months or not. :)

I have been on fruit since my last 11 day fast, I start back on salads tomorrow afternoon. :D

Andrew.
