I would also like to weigh in on this topic
as I live out where people think we have room
for more dogs and so drop whole litters off
to fend for themselves. Sometimes we can
get to them before the coyotes do but often
it is horrible to hear the killing and eating
frenzy and the pups you tried to catch that
afternoon have become a part of the food chain.
Part of it is an owner who refuses to neuter
or spay or contain their pets, and part is
that shelters now charge 35 bucks or more to
leave an animal with them. This means more
dogs left to die alone on a country road. It
is heartbreaking to those of us who must deal
with them. It is not easy to integrate MORE
dogs when you already have four and half of
them are strays. I have found homes for about
a dozen dogs over the years I have been here,
but now everyone I know has more than plenty
pets and so it makes me cringe when I see
a lowly dog, starving and thirsty, coming
up the drive.
For the most part, I would imagine dropping
your unwanted animals will usually mean a
death sentence for them. I know the 8 gorgeous
Black Lab pups that were tossed earlier in the
summer would have made good pets but they never
had a chance as they were too cautious to be
caught.
Bless you Luella for making the effort to find
a home for these dogs. I can suggest Craigslist
as an option if you live close enough to where
one is posted.
blessings,
Zoe
