I live in Texas, in an area above Houston that was rural till about 5 years ago, when progress came roaring up the freeway. Anyway, there is a town to the east of where I live called Cut n' Shoot. Many people know that it exists because of its' name. They have lots and lots of resales and junk shops and flea markets out there. The shops are not necessarily orderly, and most are filled with useless junk that is dusty and cobwebby, but you can find the overlooked treasure or two. As you are driving there, you will pass old junky trailers with dogs and cars on blocks, scrap yards, typical rural trailer trash nasty stuff. Ok, the scene is set.

I had not been to the flea market in years, and decided to go. When I got there, I noticed an overwhelming difference in the way the people "over there" looked compared to the people who live in the area that I do, which is much much cleaner, and generally more well kept. Many of the people that were there were obese, slow-moving, with slack, vapid expressions. I am not joking. Some of the younger guys actually had the open-mouthed protruding tongue look of the cretins! Many had large lips. In the past I might have made jokes about in-breeding and such. It would have been funny if I had not noticed so many. You might think I am exaggerating, but I am not. I was really rather shocked and called my boyfriend and said that I thought that these people out here needed iodine.

I DO believe that we are slowly losing our intellect for a variety of reasons, Iodine deficiency among them. We would not see an immediate effect, but a generational one, as seafood loses its content and we only get our little bit from iodized salt, which in and of itself is dangerous. We have drugs that anestisize (sp), food that addicts and makes us docile. On one hand we have giant leaps in technology and on the other we have this whole subculture of dummies, fatties, and overall base people. The depressing part was when I was at that flea market and realized that there are LOTS of people in that subculture. Makes me wonder what will be of us in a few more years.

So take a look around when you are in poorer areas of your towns. Look for that slack expression, the open mouth protruding tongue between enlarged lips, the obesity. I contend it is indeed a subclinical cretinism.
