I posted this msg. on the IBS forum, but nobody has responded, and i need help NOW! so i figured i'd post it here too ..... thanks everyone!
hi everyone ..
ok, i'm pretty new to IBS...i've had little episodes over the years, but nothing much at all, just once and a while, when i'd get stressed out. WEll, all that changed when PERIMENOPAUSE started, back in Jan....then, my entire body went ballistic! My hormones are going crazy, as to be expected at this time in my life...but back in Sept. I started having constipation, for about 5 days .. so,I was at my wits end. Now, constipation is another symptom of PERIMENOPAUSE due to the changing hormones, BUT, because it lasted 5 days, i became nervous, and felt like there were bricks in there. So, a friend of mine who is a nurse, suggested I take something called MAGNESIUM SODIUM CITRATE lax...this comes in a clear bottle, from Walgreens, and you are suposed to drink the entire 10 ozs...i drank only 7. Well, needless to say, i spent the next 5 hrs. on the toilet, but that was to be expected, and i thought once that was over, i'd be NORMAL again, which is what she assured me of.
WELL, THINK AGAIN! I HAVEN'T BEEN THE SAME SINCE! My intestines went nuts!
I found out AFTERWARDS, naturally,...that that stuff is very harsh on the intestines! I looked it up on google, and found other sites about this stuff, and it's bad after affects. Naturally, i found this out AFTERWARDS .. LOL ...
the problem is that NOW, my intestines are aching, sore, raw, i am always bloated, (this comes and goes, but it comes more than goes), and about 2 days after i took that laxative, my descending colon, on the left side of the abdomen, started SPASMING! I ran to the ER, frightened that something was really wrong, and after some tests and x-rays, they told me nothing was wrong, other than perhaps IBS!
Now, naturally, they suggested a colonoscopy to see what's wrong in there..lol..i ALREADY KNOW WHAT'S WRONG IN THERE, for pete sake! And then they tell you , I"d have to actually drink MORE of that same stuff, the night before the colonoscopy! NO THANKS! I can barley get past this! I believe it was the MAGNESIUM SODIUM CITRATE that did this to my intestines! I've had lots of other opinions on this, and most seem to agree with me. naturally, my friend, the nurse,....doesn't agree.
But, I KNOW, that's what did it, bec. this all started up about 2 days RIGHT AFTER that lax. some days i can eat certain foods, and other days not...I feel sometimes as if I have a "pebble" stuck in my intestine to the left of my belly button! that also comes and goes. But, the worst, is this awful SICK feeling, this weird, deep, spasming feeling in my colon, left side. It isn't outright PAIN, it's more of a deep ache, spasming feeling, i feel like i have to press down against it with my abdominal muscles (the way you do when you have a BM) and that seems to sort of help it, for the moment. I have to take xanax, to help this, and it DOES help, it stops the spasms and the anxiety it causes. I was already suffering from anxiety, i've had that since my early twenties, on and off. But since PERIMENOPAUSE started, in FULL SWING, the anxiety has gone through the roof.
Point is, what can you do for this? I want the dr. to give me an anti-spasmotic to stop these spasms in the intestines! I have the xanax in the meantime. He gave me KLONOPIN this time to try, I haven't used it yet, has anyone here tried that, does it give you the same relief as xanax does? I heard it is less intense!
I know there must be herbs to deal with this. I heard that calcium does good for IBS...yet, i know you have to have magnesium with it, right?
ok, well, thank you to anyone who can help me! I can't take Milk of Magnesia, or Maylox, they make me feel worse. I can take Rolaids, which helps a little bit, with the gas anyway. I have to get my life back, this is awful! I have to lay on the couch, in a ball, until the spasms stop, wiating for the xanax to kick in!
thank you all.
