Religion in itself shows nothing except a belief system. It is man's way of making sense of God with our own knowledge. But within that religion is a church and within that church is a person...and that is what God looks at. Is that person's heart seeking Him, needing Him and reaching for Him? Does that person want to do what is pleasing in the Lord's eyes?

What people hate are all the different interpretations of what people think God wants from them.

Put simply: Micah 6:8
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
