Occasional enemas, when used properly, can be very helpful and do not have any negative long term effects. Certainly, enemas taken a few times a month, even once a week will probably provide benefits that outweigh any potential drawbacks for the large majority of people who use them
Not everyone is blessed with strong peristalic function that propels fecal waste through the large intestine, and in this situation, a gentle cleansing enema can offer quick, safe and effective relief when needed.
Indeed, during the first half of the last century one of America's foremost gastroenterologists who specialized in treating constipation, Dr. Walter Alvarez, described a patient who had come to him suffering from severe longstanding constipation. She told him she hadn't tried enemas because she was afraid they might become habit forming.
His reply, as he related in one of his books, was "Far better the enema habit than the constipation habit".
So if constipation reaches the point where it's having a negative effect on the quality of your life, enemas are probably a healthier alternative.
