Honestly, I strongly believe IUD's are a wonderful form of birth control for many, many women. Mirena most definitely has its advantages and I know many women who are very happy with it. My gripe is that the side effects I encountered were never mentioned to me ahead of time and were not listed on the patient information that comes with Mirena. I feel women need to make an informed choice and that the manufacturer of Mirena should be up front with women about all of its possible side effects and their severity. I'm really not anti-IUD. I believe they should be on the market as they are a fantastic choice for many women out there, but the choice to use one really needs to be an informed one, and without the manufacturer being clear and upfront about all possible side effects and their severity, true informed choice can't take place.
Mirena was not really "sharp" and it's not really "implanted" in the uterus; basically just inserted into it and it fits snugly at the top portion of it. I never felt any discomfort due to actually having an IUD inside me... my side effects were a result of the hormone this IUD releases.
I did have the Copper T IUD (Paraguard) as well, before Mirena, but had to have that one removed due to severe bleeding each month. Other than the bleeding I loved that IUD... but the bleeding made it an unrealistic option for me.
I've always said, if only men got pregnant, how different this world would be... I have yet to find a birth control option I'm happy with!
