Anytime we ingest anything we are changing our body chemistry. You are correct that detox can be experienced by some at seemingly very low levels of Iodine supplementation... we have even seen this with some people on relatively low doses of kelp too.
Still another, may be able to get away with rather high doses without ever experiencing the same thing.
What is different between the two?
Past history of bromide, fluoride, and/or chloride overdoses in one form or another and quite possibly, and very likely for anyone born after the 70s an Iodine deficiency since birth, along with any number of mineral deficiencies along with it.
This would be a double whammy as the body will have made some concessions/adaptations to doing without and functioning on the competing mineral/element. Toxicity levels of metals and any number of environmental toxins most likely also play a part here.
All that said, we must remain aware of our own inner balance in all of this, and not over do it...
Except in cases of health emergencies, and the amelioration of things like fibrocystic breast disease etc., I am convinced, and most comfortable with the slow and go methods of Iodine supplementation. If one is known or suspected to be deficient, the one to three months of 50mg after slowly increasing to that level, and then back down to maintenance levels should be fine for most. Perhaps an intermittent low level dosing, as if on maintenance levels (see below), to begin with to get the body to recognize and then utilize the iodine before hand.
I prefer the Dr. Jarvis and Cayce methods for iodine maintenance over the long haul, along with the use of good quality sea vegetables; understanding that levels of maintenance supplementation will need adjustments for individual circumstances.
