If some are being put down in shelters in a supposedly humane way and that is alright with you then do you also believe (since you believe that it is OK to let 'fertile' animals roam freely and mate whenever they feel the need), that it is alright for all these animals being born from 'free love' to starve, take the chance of being hit by vehicles, be exposed to diseases, etc.? How many litters of dogs and cats do we need? Not all these unwanted animals are being put down needlessly or necessarily by humane methods...which humane methods are always questionable anyway...
I worked as a vet tech for several years...I know what spaying involves...I know what neutering involves. If it is done at a correct age the animal is better off. No unwanted pregancies...no unwanted litters...no unwanted animals roaming the streets having more litters, more animals to carry diseases, to starve, to be hit by cars, etc...
"perhaps we should never have bred animals in the first place and just left nature alone."
I have never bred animals intentionally or unintentionally. I don't think that most people do bred their pets intentionally. Sure, there are those uneducated ones that believe that little Jimmy and Jane needs to experience the miracle of birth that allow their pets to become pregnant...but most pregnancies of pets are unwanted. (And I am not referring to the responsible breeders)
It is a shame the way people use and abuse animals...
