I agree. One limitation is lack of funding, so all that the Alt's have to go on is the bits and pieces they can scrape up from historical sources, or the few crumbs off the table of big pharma accidently lets slip through. Since most people don't have an organic chemistry lab in their summer cottage, they're limited to what's available in the market. Wanting a quick cure, rather than designing experiments to learn all aspects of Ginko Bilobi, shark cartilige or whatever, the person figures it easier to eat a few capsules and see what happens. Damn the torpedoes. If I were suffering, I'd be more likely to do the same. It costs less than all that research hocus pocus, and doesn't require any schooling.
