Re: nope... not true...

A good rule of thumb for people just coming in, read just getting sober, is to get a sponsor. I have read that story before and I am not questing the truth of it, but from my experience, older women sponsors have saved younger women in the program an enormous amount of heartache.

There are some sorry men in and out of AA, and they will and do take advantage of pretty young women if they can. I have seen it. But I have also seen an older wiser woman acting as a real sponsor read the riot act to a would be predator. Saving her sponsee from maybe going back out because of someone else’s selfish, self centered and fear ridden actions.

I heard this woman with maybe 30 years under her belt, put it this way. “They call it 13th stepping because it is simple math. Add parts of step one and step 12 together. My life is unmanageable and I want to share it with you!”

To any young woman out there reading this thread, find a female sponsor with a few years in the program, and stick real close to her. She can steer you past some of the bad actors that do haunt some meetings.

And to the men, if you see some looser moving in on some scared, and green young woman early in her sobriety, step up. Call him to the side and tell him that that ain’t the way. Tell him to straighten up or move on.

This is our program, and we are responsible for how it goes.
