Re: Gulf dead zone to be biggest ever
Take this to another level or three.
Last week I had been reading about CAFO "concentrated animal feed ops", which is big-agri lingo that speaks to the viscious cycle put in motion by modern factory-farming methods. Just taking a quick, condensed view, concentration-camp "feed-lot" cows are fed stuff loosley called "feed", itself which is sort of a composite sludge made up in part by an assortment of GM'd grains plus bits N pieces of chopped up dead livestock (oxymoron?.... deadstock...?). The hybrid grains themselves are likely to have been produced/grown (as in squeezed or forced, like blood out of a rock) from nutrient-depleted soils slathered with state-of-the-art pesticides, insecticides and the catch-all "fertilizer"; "roundup-ready!". Before they became chopped up dead bits & pieces of feed
additives to nourish their brethern still-live livestock, the formerly live livestock ate & pooped the same, during which this "feed" passed through their body's, digestive tracts, bloodstreams, and so forth. Traditionally, manure has always been considered nutrient-rich natural fertilizer to be spread onto and into the soil during the next planting cycle... in a similar way to traditional crops from which some seeds are retained for growing a subsequent crop; heirloom. God only knows what this literal excrement constitutes today, let alone 5 or 10 cycles down the road. It does not take much critical thinking to realize that this neuvo dung probably should be handled - hazmat style, and shipped off this planet to be stored at a safe distance on some far away planet at least until such time that a real scientist can figure out AND THEN explain the situation to big-agri's pseudo-science scientists. Big-agri doesn't even know what this output really is, neither do they care, which is why they don't allow such a silly unknown to get in their way. As part of the CAFO mentality, the good-little corp farmer scoops up CAFO dung by the literal truck loads where it's been accumulating off to the side, and then turns this .... stuff (demeaning use of an otherwise fine word) back into that stuff formerly known as natural soil when it comes time to produce the next "crop"; repeat ad infinitem. Relatively speaking, there is another term being blurred and, conceivably, demeaned in this process; shit. Traditionally, this is thought of as output. Based upon CAFO methodology, it seems fair to say that the term has been redefined to be ouput and or input and or output again, as the good-corporate farmer pleases. It's logical to expect that at some point, forces will conspire - like rain, to the extent that a considerable amount of this neuvo input/output "shit" will then go other places, perhaps some into ground water, perhaps some may find it's way up into clouds via evaporation, perhaps some may runoff & into streams that eventually may find it's way to yet other places, perhaps even much larger other places, to include rivers, lakes and possibly even the Gulf. Isn't that special? This reminds of an old Letterman'ism from many years ago when he remarked that one of his favorite things about NYC is that it is the only town he knows of that, when it rains, it makes it's own gravy.
