Question about slowed metabolism

So I keep reading about how fasting slows your metabolism so when you break your fast you have so be SUPER careful about not falling back into your old eating habits or you will gain everything and then some back. So wouldn't it make sense that (with being cautious about your eating) joining a gym once your fast is fully broken you would raise your metabolism to what it was pre-fast (maybe even higher) and be able to maintain the weight loss even having (insert your weakness food here) once in a while? Thoughts? Anyone done this and been successful at keeping the weight off?
