Vaccines

What are your thoughts on vaccines for your animals, in particular for cats? I read a couple posts here about it. Is rabies really necessary? I've neglected to take my cat to the vet the past 2 years but up until then he has always had his shots every year. We have a 15 month old son whom we have chosen not to vaccinate and so I figured I wouldn't want to vaccinate my cat as well for similar reasons. He is mainly an indoor cat but he does go outside a little each day. And what about feline leukemia and distemper? I remember him always getting those too. Thanks so much!!
