I'm no expert but my instructions I received with my zapper says to avoid contact with the copper tubes touching WHEN SWITCHED ON as this could short-circuit the system and could damage the circuit board. (I've actually done it too by accident but it seems to be working just fine).

I'm sure yours will be okay, try changing the battery, then you'll know.
