Re: Dog and Cat Interaction Problem - Ideas Needed

I have Shelties and cats. The Sheltie is just doing what a Sheltie does - Herding the cat. High Prey drive?? The dog isn't seeing the cat as food, he's seeing it as something that needs herding. Simply getting on the dog's butts and training them and teaching them not to with lots of loud "NOs" is all you really need to do. Keep them on leashes if you have too. Not having experience with dogs or at least herding breeds, yeah you should just put these dogs in training classes or at least join a Sheltie group somewhere on the internet that can give you advice on them.

It's definitley is not fair to drug and give your cat poisions because she's understnadably scared of the dog. She shouldn't have to not be afraid of a dog barking and chasing her.

If you feel you need to drug a Sheltie because of it's energy, then you should just rehome him. They are high energy dogs. They shouldn't have to be drugged either because you can't deal with it. If they're not getting enough of their energy out running around the yard, then they're going to get like that inside the house and taking it out on the cats. A walk or 2 around the block a day isn't enough, they need to run at full speed.

Dominance issues over the female? Are they both fixed?
