rat poison
I rushed my puppy to the vet this AM because she was coughing up blood. The vet is 99% sure she ate some rat poison. Since rat poison kills rats by an anti-coagulating agent (blood thins so much the rats hemorrhage (sp?) to death), the antidote is large dosages of Vitamin K by sub-cutaneous injection.
Haley got a mega dose of Vitamin K today and she'll get another one tomorrow. Her temp is normal, CBC shows that her white count is normal (no infection), hematocrit is normal (red blood cells), but her platelet count is lower than normal. The vet says this is due to all of her platelets are racing to the scene of the hemorrhage to try to stop it- normal body healing procedure.
Also, Haley's respiration is labored. The vet suspects that there is fluid (blood) building up in her lungs. The bleeding is coming from her nose rather than her digestive tract, which is what made the vet suspect rat poison rather than a tick disease.
The vet has her under close observation, but the prognosis is very good. We caught it early enough that she will be fine. After shot #2 of Vitamin K, Haley is to be on oral Vitamin K for 3-4 weeks until her body rids itself of the poison.
Would you do anything else to help her heal faster and get the toxin out quicker? I'm not sure when she is going to feel like eating.
Thanks for any help.
Blessings,
-Donna
