Why do people join the military ?

A question which has been puzzling me lately. I know a 19 year old girl who hates the US but still joined the marines saying:"Its a challenge!" I guess the only reason she joined is because of her lesbian friend. I always thought the military is for the patriots and not for young girls who dont know what to do with their lifes. And now she wants to be a field medic. Its hard to picture once a sweet girl living next door with the prettiest smile on the earth giving morphine shots to soldiers who just lost a half of their body because of a suicide bomber.
