Re: Nature Cures
Hi Lapis,
Thank you for your inspiring and informative post. I have not watched the video clips yet, I'm impatiently waiting for them to download over my soooo slow dial-up connection.
I agree with what you say and I know from personal experience that the days I eat all raw and have my vege juices I feel great and as soon as I eat cooked food, I feel heavier and more sluggish.
I have had an avid interest in the Gerson therapy for many years and would like to add a few things. The basis of the therapy is restoring the potassium/sodium balance to the tissues of the body. This is achieved by following a high fruit and vege diet with appropriate supplementation over a period of 2 years. The bulk of this being achieved by 13 glasses of freshly pressed juices per day. However, the diet is not 100% raw nor 100% vegan. The Hippocrates soup, which is an important part of the diet for its high potassium content, consists of potatoes and other veges cooked for 2 hours. Other cooked and slow stewed fruits and veges are also allowed. Another very important part of the therapy is the supplementation of raw liver which was replaced with crude liver injections due to toxicity of commercially raised livestock. While the diet is very low fat and low protein, low fat dairy products in the form of pot cheese, churned buttermilk and non-fat plain yogurt are added after six weeks. However, the first six weeks of the therapy does not allow any concentrated protein foods but these are added as Gerson discovered that immunity is compromised when such severe protein restriction is continued beyond six weeks.
I'm not sure if the protein restriction causes compromised immunity only in those persons with terminal illnesses (as most following the Gerson protocol would have) or if this would be a general issue. Perhaps a 100% raw diet would not raise the same protein issues??? This info conflicts with other raw food diets and philosophies and has been a conflict for me as well. I have been following MH's protocol for a few weeks now (mono fruit diet and OJ fasting) and while I'm feeling great, I'm a little concerned that I may be setting myself up for long term deficiencies. I have noticed that I have lost muscle mass and have become quite 'soft' in places I don't want to be soft.
Lapis or anyone, your comments and input would be much appreciated.
