It's not touchy to me....

Paul and his early followers were largely responsible for the first pagan add-ons to orthodox Christianity. The death and resurrection, virgin birth and so on. He took the movement outside of Israel to the Gentiles, and attached a lot of the Mithris mystery cult ideas onto the original Christian teachings.

The Essene Christian movement (which was in opposition to Paul and his paganized hybrid) was led by James, brother of Jesus. James was stoned to death in Jerusalem and his followers were persecuted. Not long after, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem (in 70 AD ) and the original version of Christianity was wiped out, the teachings were forgotten, not to revived again until earlier this century. However the other branches of Christianity, centered in the Roman and Greek worlds lived on.... one to become Orthodox, the other to become Gnostic.
