I can totally relate to all you're saying. It's why I always said "no" when my Mom would spout the virtues of getting an RN degree - more $$$ than teaching, that's the truth! And more jobs.
I always figured, though, that the best compromise, if one had the time and energy, was to become a nurse practitioner - so you could take patients with insurance, which helps you get paid - and get a degree as a Naturpathic Doctor, which you can do by mail/correspondence school. That way you could set up your own practice. More and more insurance companies will be sponsoring nurse practitioners for general doctor visits, rather than doctors, in order to save money.
