If Jesus were merely a myth, how could his life and teachings have perpetrated so much angst, hatred, resentment, anger, etc.? (Or, on the other hand, so much love, caring, giving, charity?) If He never existed, why all the fuss? Wouldn't He be about as influential as a cartoon character? The reality is that no one would subject himself to all the trials the disciples and the apostle Paul subjected themselves to for a fantasy or a phantom. Many early Christians would not have held to their faith and paid with their lives for Roman Coliseum entertainment had they not had a living, growing, ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
