yellow toenail

Does naybody know what exactly causes and how to get rid of yellow toenails. I've noticed that for the last several years, my big toe is yellowish. I thought is was from dark nail polish, but I only wear light now and its still yellowish. I figured now that I'm activcely trying to Colon Cleanse this would change, but nothing yet.
