I Know Why The Northeastern Blackout Happened
DEREGULATION!!
Remember when you enjoyed commercial flying? Your seat fit. In- flight services were excellent. Flights were on time. Attendents didn't threaten to rip out your juglar when you forgot to "move your seat back to an upright position." Most lines were three or four persons long. Flights weren't canceled due to non-profitable passenger loads. Airlines did not monopolize cities by strangling
lower cost carriers. Thank you, Mr. Congressman... Now we have true competition.
How about our health care system? The best in the world, if you can afford it. Forty million Americans can't. Do you belong to an HMO? Don't you just want to hug 'em? Fifteen to twenty percent of private insurance costs go to overhead. That amount would pay for drug coverage for all Americans.
Then there's our loss of local newspapers (and local news) as conglomerates gobble up the locals and control our news content.
As one Gannet executive stated, "I'll take a 30% profit over a
Pulitzer any time!" Capitalism has trashed journalism.
How about the monopolization of our airwaves? Many towns can't even get a local weather forecast. Forget sport results, social events or hometown politics. Clear Channel will tell you what music you like... And whose agenda will benefit from slanted news coverage. I'm not a futurist - this is occuring all over the U.S.. Do a search for FCC or Tommy Boy Deux (Collin Powell's larvae.)
And now, the cause of the outage: Alas, electricity has, also, been deregulated. Redundancy (or the reliability) of our electic energy is assumed to be a given. Sorry folks, reliability reduces profits. When a power company is the sole source of your energy, do you think, for one minute, that they give a damn whether you are pleased with the quality of their product? When public disgust becomes too intense, the electric company invests in Congressmen and lobbyists. Reliability is far more expensive.
The horror of 9\11 happened for the very same reason. Corporate greed overruled the implementation of security measures against what occured. This corporate philosophy has always placed treasure over spilled American blood - on the battle field and in the factories. And now, in our offices and government buildings.
