Your reference to Thoreau reminds me of one of his quotes that I have written down in my quote book...

"We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate."

Ha-ha!

And...I'll just throw this one in too, because I like it:

"Should not every apartment in which man dwells be lofty enough to create some obscurity overhead, where flickering shadows may play at evening about the rafters?" Thoreau again.
