SARS & Glyconutrients!
2. SARS and Glyconutrients
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is an "atypical
pneumonia of unknown aetiology." (1) In addition,
scientists at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC),
"and other laboratories have detected a previously
unrecognized coronavirus in patients with SARS." The new
coronavirus is the leading hypothesis for the cause of
SARS, however, other viruses are still under investigation
as potential causes." (2) (Coronaviruses are the cause of
most common colds.)
SARS then is an atypical pneumonia in which a previously
unrecognized coronavirus has been detected in some
patients. While, the WHO and CDC grapple with finding the
cause so that a vaccine and/or other treatment can be
developed, we are to be on the lookout for symptoms. The
CDC tells us that generally, "SARS begins with a fever
greater than 100.4°F [>38.0°C]. Other symptoms may include
headache, an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches.
Some people also experience mild respiratory symptoms.
After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may develop a dry cough
and have trouble breathing." (2)
To get a perspective of SARS, we also need to know what
pneumonia is and how it affects the body. According to
the American Lung Association, pneumonia is a "serious
infection or inflammation of your lungs" and can have over
30 different causes. The American Lung Association also
states that with pneumonia the "air sacs in the lungs fill
with pus and other liquid. Oxygen has trouble reaching
your blood. If there is too little oxygen in your blood,
your body cells can't work properly. Because of this and
spreading infection through the body pneumonia can cause
death." (3)
Besides wearing masks over our faces and not traveling,
is there something more we can do to help ourselves? To
understand what we can do, we need to get past our
emotional reaction to SARS and all that we envision that
could happen if we or members of our family contract this
illness. We also have to set aside for now what we have
heard and seen about SARS in the news media.
Instead, we will focus on words like fever, headaches,
cough and inflammation, which are familiar to all of us.
These forms of discomfort represent activity by the body's
immune system to heal and repair itself. It is common
knowledge that we do what we can to help our body's immune
system handle this process by giving it proper rest and
nutrition so that the body can expel the invaders, those
free radicals that are causing havoc. Certainly, it is
advisable to consult a healthcare professional so that you
do all you can to help yourself. Recall here that SARS is
a virus--an "atypical pneumonia." In your own experience,
you have most likely found that usual treatment of a virus
does not include
Antibiotics , but, instead, treatment is
focused on treating the symptoms and giving you comfort
while your body focuses on getting well.
Do you think your body cares whether or not you are
suffering from an "atypical pneumonia" of unknown cause
or just the usual kind of pneumonia? Do you think it
knows the difference? The body's mode of operation is
always the same. When you suffer fever, headaches,
inflammation and cough, your body is alerting you that
something is wrong and it is working at restoring harmony
and balance within. The severity of the illness will
vary but the response is the same. The body is programmed
to run like a fine-tuned machine and our job is to give it
what it needs.
End of story? Well, not quite. We will now shift our
attention to glyconutrients. Glyconutrients are not a
cure or a pharmaceutical. This is food, and it is made
up of the 8 essential sugars that are needed by the body
for cell-to-cell communication and immune system support.
This is food in the form of a supplement.
As we are all beginning to find out, it is necessary to
supplement our diets today. Methods of agriculture,
harvesting, processing, manufacturing, preserving and
cooking all contribute negatively to bioavailability of
our food today. In other words, we may be eating good-
tasting food but getting little nutrition to support our
bodies. A most significant loss to us today is food
variety. Consider for a moment that "[a]s hunter-
gatherers we had an abundance of fruits, nuts, seeds,
legumes, berries, vegetables and wild game right at our
fingertips...and (this diet) could contain up to 333
different species of plants, insects and small animals."
(4)
Glyconutrients were a part of that diet in the form of
saps or gums which form within plants and on trees.
Of the 200 known saccharides (sugars), only 8 are
needed by humans. All 8 of these essential sugars
became available to us in 1994 as a glyconutrient
complex. This is the raw material the body needs for
cell-to-cell communication and immune system support.
Of all the other essential nutrients needed by the body,
such as; water, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids
and amino acids, only the 8 essential sugars provide this
important cell-to-cell communication. Without proper
cell-to-cell communication, healing is at best faulty and
incomplete.
Although the cause of SARS is unknown, it suggests that
it is coming from a source we personally have no control
over. However, we do have control over how we respond to
SARS and how we take care of our own bodies so that we can
successfully ward off invaders whatever the cause may be
or the names they are given.
Dr. Michael Schlachter tells us: "Health is constructed
upon the foundation of cellular health. There is
overwhelming evidence and scientific research that
ingestion of certain nutrients - including glyconutrients,
phytogenins, and phytochemicals, can fundamentally change
cellular health and subsequently the body's health." (5)
