DIRTY MOPS IN LAUNDRY POLE HOLDERS: A TRUE HEALTH DANGER
Hi all,
Some people seem to be worried that SARS can be spread via particles of burnt paper in Singapore corridors. Please let's be aware that there is absolutely no threat of spreading SARS through floating pieces of burnt paper since the fire will have killed all possible viruses already. I would like to emphasise once again that one of the great achievements in Singapore is mutual respect for each other's religion.
More relevant to me is the danger that derives from the habit of Singaporeans to hang clothes on poles outside. When people wonder how the SARS virus can be spread vertically in a HDB building, think of this: quite a bit of Singaporeans (and maids) are not ashamed to put their dirty mop in the holder under their kitchen window, even though they know that the dirty mop water will drip on the laundry of neighbours below. Imagine there is a SARS patient in one of the homes; the rooms will be cleaned and the contaminated mop is put under the kitchen window outside. The dripping water will be absorbed in the clothes of other neighbours below. Now there you have a danger you could be really worried about.
I really hope the government will issue huge fines to people who are putting mops in holders, meant for laundry only, since they are a tremendous danger to the health of others. But most of all, I hope that all Singaporeans will practise social control on neighbours who don't have the courtesy to store their dirty mops inside their homes.
