Re: Cause of bad breath--it's not what you think

I think the original poster has a point. Although many things can cause BO, one cause could serve a function. (I'm not saying this is the cause of all BO, but it is interesting)...

From the net:
"Many animals communicate by smell: they release pheromones (airborne chemicals) to send messages to others. Pheromones play an important part in reproduction and other social behavior. They are used by many animals, including insects, wolves, deer, and even humans"

Maybe BO itself seves a function in nature, maybe BO is just a symptom of a larger health issue. Maybe BO is not THE health problem, but intentional communication that tells others that the person is unhealthy.

Body Odor and Acne repel others and lessens the chances of that person reproducing. Maybe this is one way of nature removing unhealthy people from the gene pool.

Sounds like a plausible theory, maybe offensive odors are a way of communicating to others that the person is sick and thus unfit for mating and reproducing. Even visual problems such as Acne could serve a function of "outcasting" the person. Maybe BO and Acne are not the problem, but intentional communication by the body, signs that signal an underlying health problem (psychological or physical) to others. Darwin and survival of the fittest at work? If so it seems plausible that one could modify his or her BO or acne by adopting a positive outlook congruent with survival (confidence, leadership, control, success...) and getting rid of negative emotions (fear, depression...), tricking the body/nature into thinking the person is more fit and better to survive. Success (less BO/acne) creates confidence and positive traits, wich lead to real positive emotions, more success, more positive emotions... and it snowballs the person into a positive survival mode. Success breeds success and survival.
