Use the fruit/vegetable remains in a composter! I have one in the kitchen for vegetables only. It is a little larger than a diaper pail and has special compost worms in it. I use the "worm tea" as fertilizer for my plants.
I am also fortunate enough to have a big composter outside. Remember, our top soil is depleted. This kind of natural soil enricher is the way to go.
