All I can say to really help you understand is to tell you to do a search on the web on International Churches of Christ or Kip McKean, then you'll see what I'm talking about. He broke off the mainline church of christ to form a church of truly "committed" disciples. It had good intentions at first, but turned into a church where people were treated very harshly for their sin and also if they didnt have "visitors" coming to church with them. Everyone had to have a "discipler", which is an older Christian over you to help you to learn to be more like Christ. Because of this structure, people were doing things out of fear of man, rather than love for God. There was very harsh accountability. We were taught that we were the ONLY group of people saved because we were the only church around the world committed to making disciples of all nations. A lot of leaders NOW, have banished these teachings and practices and have promoted freedom with their particular congregations. There's just soo........... much to tell, you have to look it up to understand completely. Hope this helps.
