Kombucha mother is a cellulose fungus, and yes, it contains many different kinds of living organisms.

I have been on a glass and ceramic *kick* for about 5 years now. Glass is best- better than ceramic. I cook in pyrex/ ceramic and then transfer the tea to a glass container- not sure if I mentioned that.
