Re: External funding for religious shrines
Actual, Real, focused intent, yes, thats what happened.
The Church WANTED the Natives , under control, afraid, powerless - and sure, if that helps, make them dead.
This was a directive from the politicians , with the Church being the agents who would carry out the deed.
Support never seems to come without strings, and the Church was well funded. The congregation thought of natives as heathens , whose death or murder could mean no more than an animal's death.
The Church leaders went so far as to say that "if the people wo are exposed to these blankets don't die , it is because God wants them to live, because they go to church ; therefore, any who die from the illness these blankets bring are not in the favour of God". So, they exposed some white churchgoers to the same blankets, and none got ill [carefully chosen ones who had had smallpox already]. Then, stage two sees them expose the Indians to the blankets that had come from a hospital where people died of smallpox, wrapped in these same blankets which were never even washed.
Oh ya, it was on purpose, and the church was in on it.
This does not mean chuch is bad,or religion, it just means that THAT church was not opposed to genocidal acts done under the guise of aiding the natives.
But it does mean that church doesn't make people be good people, we have to do that part ourselves. Individuals are capable of being good without churches and gods and religions.
