NO, not all Filipino families are like yours. Both my parents are Filipino, but I was raised here in America. My family (on both sides) have a long history of being well-educated; my father has a PhD and my mother has a BA. One of my aunts is a nurse; I have a great aunt that was a dentist (her husband was also a dentist); I have an uncle that was a surgeon; my grandparents (on my father's side) owned a book publishing company.

There CANNOT be a general statement said that all Filipino families think that a college education is a waste of time and money. This statement can be applied to various families across the world -- meaning SOME Filipino families may believe this statement, while others do not. SOME Finnish families may believe this statement, while others do not, etc.

Since I am an American, I don't believe that being raised in America made your family feel that college is a waste. In fact, many people immigrate to America to get that higher education, to have more doors open up for them as Americans.

My advice to you is to go to college if that's what you really want. Do what you really want. Having a college education (not to be cliché) is priceless. In college, you'll surround yourself by people you like and admire... and you WILL succeed.

P.S. Sorry, I don't know what you name means. But for future reference, it's Filipino NOT "filippino." Please make a note of this as many people spell it wrong, especially when they reference the Philippines (1 L, 2 Ps) -- usually they write Phillipines... wrong. :) Tweet
