It's common, but not normal. When you read old threads you see many references to fullness in the throat, a tight feeling, and discomfort. What exactly is going on with you, I don't know. My own experience was that I did not have swelling in the beginning, but later -- after at least a year of heavy dosing and detox -- I definitely did. It seemed weird to have my thyroid swell when I was handling the Iodine without a problem. However, I believe now that Iodine was asking my thyroid to do more than it could, namely, produce thyroid hormone. I remained functionally hypothyroid and with a goiter until I started thyroid hormone. I still need it today. I don't believe my experience was common, though, and you might read Ginagirl's posts about her thyroid odyssey. More people have recovered thyroid function than have experienced it the way I did.
