Tobacco was revered as a sacred plant and was used by native cultures for thousands of years in snuff, pipe and cigar format. In none of these methods was the tobacco smoke inhaled directly into the lungs.
It was only when cigarettes were invented in 1865 by Washington Duke that it became fashionable to inhale the smoke into the lungs, and nowadays every man and his dog knows about the extremely harmful effects of that practice.
In Elizabethan times it was considered to be a panacea when taken as snuff but nowadays Tobacco is associated with poor health and disease. Because of the detrimental effects on health, cigarettes have given tobacco a bad name.
It is nowadays seen as a filthy habit when once it was seen as the epitome of refined society.
