The one thing that may disqualify him in most christian's minds whether he was a believer/born-again or not, is the fact he had stated that he had never asked for forgiveness.
Now, I'm not sure how he means that. Maybe he had not asked for forgiveness from his most recent adult time sins? I don't know. If he was raised in the Presbyterian church, then he was always praying prayers of forgiveness. He was raised as a child in the First Presbyterian Church with his family. I don't know if he was baptized as a child or not.
I for one did not ask for forgiveness before the Holy Spirit of God poured into my life. That came later after I read my bible and realized I needed to. So I don't believe there is any absolute perfect formula to being saved/born-again. It seems to happen differently for different people.
