Sure, well you have to find one that works and stick to it, it builds up. Here and there won't help you.
As for meditation it is best to find a teacher, at a zen centre or regular group. This is very important to support the initial "get to grips with it" period.
Zen : well of course something is happening otherwise there would be no point; but it is not the usual activity of the mind. It is difficult to explain, it is more like with a bit of guidance you will slip into the right state like getting into a bath, and then you will see the peace of it.
The Tara Brach Radical Acceptance CD includes a number of basic and very good practices, calming and soothing, and she has a lovely voice : you can find her on youtube. It's a very good CD actually.
