Hey ChubbyOne,

We're proud of you too -- for eciding to take control of your life, not to drink alcohol and lose weight. Kudos! Take yourself on a victory walk around the neighborhood, smiling and waving to your neighbors. Do this every day you don't drink.

It will help with your weight as well as helping you reconnect with the sober world. They will be delighted to see you re-emerge after your horrible loss. It is every parent's nightmare. I'm sorry it became a reality for you.

Those drawn to alcohol are often "sugar sensitive", with mood issues exaggerated by breads, pasta, sodas and sweets. Don't know if this is you. If it is, the lemonaid fast may not be the best.

To avoid temptation, one needs to keep moods even. The best way to do this is to keep blood Sugar level steady by eating "low glycemic" foods. This includes drinks. Maple syrup is high glycemic, so the lemonaid could cause your blood Sugar to rise then crash two hours later. Sugar sensitive individuals feel these changes more acutely and reach for something to raise their blood sugar -- alcohol, carbs, sweets -- and the cycle begins again.

You're overweight. That doesn't mean you're well nourished. Alcohol tends to deplete the body's nutritional stores. Low levels of zinc, magnesium, vitamin B, etc. are seen by those who drank daily. Recovering from drinking means rebuilding your body nutritionally.

My feeling is that you might do better on a fresh veggie juice fast than a lemonaid fast. Add lemons in your veggie juices for flavor as well as to cleanse and detox. Veggie juices supply more nutrients and less sugar than maple syrup. You need minerals from green above ground veggies, mixed with small amounts of carrot or beet juice to add calories.

Carrot and beet are sweet juices that should be drunk sparingly if you want to lose weight. Dilute the juice blends with water if the flavor is too strong. Play with different veggies to get a range of different vitamins and minerals and to find juices you think tasty.

This type of fast requires more thinking and doing than the lemonaid fast -- it also has more variety. Good to keep you busy, not thinking about sad things and heading to the liquor store for a pick-me up.

Oh, forgot to answer the specific questions.

1) Eye & headaches. These are withdrawl symptoms. They aren't likely to recur with the same intensity. If you feel a headache coming on, drink pure water -- lots of it.

2) How are your bowels flowing? Make sure you have consistent eliminations, several times per day before starting a fast. A good way to get there is to eat an apple before each meal. The apple helps you eat less fattening stuff at the meal and it provided 5gm fiber.

3) Movements in the belly are probably gas and fluids. Some people have bad parasites, but I'm not convinced that it is epidemic. Healthy bodies coexist in nature, with hydrochloric acid in our stomach and the good bacteria in our guts fighting off the bad guys. Focus on rebuilding a healthy body, not on the gross descriptions of parasites.

4) Eating whole fresh produce will not rest the digestive system as completly, but it may work better for you. This is your time -- an opportunity to tune into yourself. If it feels better to eat whole fruits and veggies, do it. If not, don't.
