Antidepressants and SSRI's

I'm curious what people's opinions are of SSRIs and antidepressants are here. Before I found worms in my stool, I was diagnosed with anxiety and prescribed an SSRI. After seeing the worms I felt it was dangerous to be on something that was not targeting the root cause of what I was dealing with. I have also understood that SSRIs can permanently change your GI flora and can create dependency.
I suppose the opposing argument would be about the fact that these drugs help shore up one's mood while battling infections like parasites.

What are your experiences with these drugs? Opinions?
