I think the poster asked a valid question. How do you know if the Iodine we consume is real? Or in other words purity of the element.

Well, one long way to find out is to give it to a lab for testing. Read this ....

Iodine makes starches a deep blue color so cut a piece of potato and drop one drop of Iodine on it and see if it turns deep blue or not.
