rip up carpet?

I'm moving into an old apartment in Los Angeles with 15 year old carpet. I also have a parasite infestation and mercury poisoning. Would it make sense for me to pull up the carpet before I move in? I've ben told pulling it up will release dangerous toxins, and I'm better off just leaving it. Not sure what to do!
