With all this talk on losing muscle masses, can you gain it back (of all that were lost) once you're back to your regular diet?

I'm a little underweight for my age and gaining weight has always been a challenge. It is  the main reason why I'm a little hesitant to do any kind of fast. But may primary goal right now is for health reason.
