There is another piece to this puzzle problem to be found, hidden in plain view.

I would imagine cultured control groups and experimental groups, on a variety of media (being sure to include in the mix an oatmeal as well as a simple malt or pda agar), the experimental groups being restricted to varied (according to group) specific light wavelength frequencies, as well as darkness, may prove advantageous in stressing, in forcing this organism to reveal more about itself.

I would imagine a surprise awaits.
