Had a similar experience. In addition to the magnesium and selenium recommended by another, here are things to try.
(As you have found out, never take HCL if you have reflux as it will only make the problem worse and you could do serious damage to your esophagus. It can be taken for heartburn without reflux if you think you have low stomach acid. Also, once low doesn't mean always low. I had to back off b/c I had started making enough on my own and therefore adding more in by pill was too much. It just overflowed up due to the reflux issue.
Pure aloe vera juice will help both in terms of gut heal and stopping the burning feeling. Great stuff.
Try digestive enzymes to get the food broken down. you may find your issue is not low stomach acid anymore but a different kind of digestive issue.
Also, peppermint CAUSES reflux so cease and desist with that for now. It relaxes the sphincter and allows the acid to escape the stomach environment into the esophagus.
Try one of those slanted pillow thingies to help keep acid down at night. You can get them on Amazon.
D-limonene is helpful taken with meals to keep acid at bay.
