Don't give garlic to cats.  It's toxic to them.

One thing that works on fleas is food grade diatomaceous earth.  Just sprinkle it on their coats.  Also on your rug to get rid of any fleas in the house.  Leave it on the rug for a couple of days and then vacuum.

DE can irritate the nasal passages so don't breathe it as you sprinkle it on the cat, and keep it away from the cat's face, but once it settles it's okay.  It can also irritate the skin, so it's a good idea to wear gloves while handling it.
