PATIENT’S STATEMENT
February 4, 2014

To All Healthcare Providers:
Please keep this patient statement in all my records for review and consideration during diagnosis and treatment.

Patient: Kenny R Farthing
DOB: 09/09/1947
Sex: Male
History
Colon cancer 1996, upper level of colon. Removed 17 inches of colon and treated with 5FU chemotherapy for 10 months. No polyps detected in follow up colonoscopies to date.
High numbers in liver blood tests for 18 years. It always concerned physicians. One told me that it had to be addressed. When I asked why, he said that the numbers would continue to increase and cause problems. Then I asked for a timeframe and was told maybe a year.
That’s when I presented the tests for the last 10 years with the same numbers and relayed to him that I was told by my oncologist that the chemo was the probable cause.
Present Concern
July 2013 – My wife and I were on our boat in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. My weight was more than 250 pounds. We decided that we had to do something so we moved our boat to Key Largo away from our partying friends and began serious dieting. I started the low carb Atkins diet that had worked for me in the past and my wife did the South Beach. She wasn’t much overweight and wanted to losejust a few pounds. She went from 135 to 120. I went to my goal of 195. Three weeks into the diet I had lost 25 pounds. I was exercising doing sit ups, pushups, walking and jogging.
Then it happened. The last of August I was working on my truck, fell and my left arm caught the full force. I heard a pop in my upper left rib cage. I knew then that I had probably broken a rib. Over the years I have broken many. As usual over the next couple of days it became extremely sore. This time however I also had a large knot on my left breast and my left nipple was very sensitive. The next day I started to do my sit up routine and felt two large knots in my upper abdomen. One was higher on the right center about 6 or 7 cm and the other was a little lower on the left about 5 cm. That was 6 months ago. I am a slow healer but my ribs got better and the knot and sensitive nipple on my left breast went away.
The two knots in my abdomen were still there. No pain very little if any size change, but uncomfortable when laying on them. No problem with exercising or jogging. My family talked me into getting them checked which brings us to the present.
I was seen on January 29 by Dr. Michael Canning, a general surgeon at Baptist Hospital in Miami. I had lab test on that day and also had a CT scan on January 30.
On January 31 Dr Canning informs me that I have numerous tumors on or around my liver. My wife and I panicked and started reading everything we could find o liver cancer: detection, symptoms, treatments and the best places to have all this done. We chose M D Anderson in Orlando.
Now, for the Mystery and Reason for my concern:
Liver cancer in everything we have researched including the M D Anderson website, defines liver cancer in stages as follows:
• Stage I - One tumor not spread to nearby blood vessels.
• Stage II – One tumor spread to nearby blood vessels or more than 5 cm in size.
• Stage III – In levels:
Stage III A – More than one tumor larger than 5 cm or has spread to major branch of blood vessels near the liver.
Stage III B
Stage III C
• Stage IV
Now for the irony. I fell the last of August, 2013 and the next day got symptoms of Stage IIIA liver cancer. Really? This was 7 months ago.
Now for the next bit of irony:
Symptoms of Liver Cancer
• Weight Loss – yes, but not unexpected. I worked hard for that; no bread, fruit, pasta, rice or sweets.
• Pain - Nope, not even while exercising for a minimum of the last 6 months.
• Loss of Appetite – I wish.
• Nausea or Vomiting – Not since the chemo treatment 18 years ago.
• Jaundice - Skin hasn’t changed; urine a little darker, but clears when I drink more water.
• Tiredness – Nope
• Bloating – Again, nope.
Now you see my concern. My history is all documented facts. I am not in denial. I am retired from the military as a grunt in the USMC and an attack helicopter pilot in the Army for a total of 26 years. I have fought in every war between 1965 to 1990.
I am not afraid of dying and I am not from Missouri.
But you do have to show me and help me understand how this could all be happening based on the above info – Stage III A liver cancer with the above symptoms for 7 months?
