Re: Weightlifting After A Fast

The decision of whether or not to exercise while fasting should be made on a case by case basis. Exercising during some types of fasts that limit your nutrient and water intake for extensive periods of time can be damaging to your body.

"For many, exercising while Water Fasting is a bad idea.
Many people say that they've felt so good on a fast that they went out and ran 10 miles — or something similar to this.
This intuitively — to me — is not a good idea. But physiologically, it isn’t either.
When you fast you go into a mode of resource conservation. This means your body looks to conserve energy by burning fat.
When you exercise, you start to use more calories and your body may dip into protein stores to get you the energy you need. However, if you do exercise keep it simple, conserve your energy and rest. Your body is healing, so give it a total break. The best exercise for fasting is very gentle yoga and light walking — if you are strong enough"............Dr Alan Goldhamer of TrueNorth Fasting Retreat and Health Centre.

Usually it is said never to exercise after eating or drinking something. But in the case of exercising during fasting, it is better to perform exercise AFTER you break your fast. According to an experiment mentioned in the the Journal of Applied Physiology, reports that exercising AFTER breaking the fast, reduces the rate of muscle glycogen depletion and increases fat utilization.

Both Dr. Haas and Dr. Chaitow state that short-to long-term therapeutic fasts rely on a low-stress, quiet environment. They also stress the need in avoiding exercise and medications during this time as vital.
