There's no question they are less this year for my sky. I watch pretty intently. I have no explanation. However, in terms of long trails, I've talked to many pilots and experts who state it is possible for a trail to be long and persistent and still be a normal exhaust contrail. Of course, the atmospheric conditions have to be right. In this case, I cannot tell them apart unless there's cleary a chemical tinge to it such as a rainbow effect or odd peculiarities in the cloud structure.
