Ive been using this stuff that I got at Whole Foods called "Morning Song Unscented Bee Balm for Lips".

And no its not hard to apply. I no longer get buildup. And I got to this point by moisturizing and leaving them alone, which I why I seriously recommend you consider it instead of keeping them dry.
